Welcome to the Spirit of Place Project website. Through imagination and art, Spirit of Place Projects link and connect young people locally, nationally and internationally in celebration of diverse creative expressions and global awareness.
Directors Sam Carter and Sheila Hall established Spirit of Place Projects as a non-profit initiative to engage youth, partners and collaborators. The exhibitions and activities underscore our belief in the importance of young artists and their visions.

Works by young artists from past, present and future Olympic Host Cities take centre stage at the Chinese Cultural Centre Gallery. The works of 35 young artists from Beijing, 75 from British Columbia, and 17 school projects from London are based on the pillar themes of the Olympic Movement: engaging the body through sport, the planet through sustainability and the collaboration of diverse cultures increasing global awareness.
Bamboo/cedar gates, designed by Emily Carr graduates, greet visitors to a series of events surrounding Zodiac Square, in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown. Antique Beijing tricycles become mobile art studios, providing tools for visitors to make "Olympic wishes" to be displayed on the bamboo/cedar welcome gates. Wishes will be read daily by young performers during the Winter Games. Visitors are also encouraged to craft their own interpretations of the creatures involved in a mythological race that first established the order of the Asian zodiac.
