As part of the Cultural Olympiad in 2008, Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design presented Spirit of Place/ Sport, Culture and Sustainability - BC Young Artists Exhibition. Fifteen Emily Carr Institute alumni, from various regions in British Columbia, selected five young artists from their area. The results of the alumni and young artists' collaboration are 75 digital images of the young artists with their work and the 15 original works featured in the 2008 exhibition. Photo documentation from the workshops with comments from senior artists about the creative processes was included. The artwork produced by the youth reflects the qualities of their regions, the spaces and spirits of their place along with the pillar themes of the Olympic Games: sport, culture and sustainability. The exhibition was opened by the Arts Umbrella Sarah McLaughlin Youth Choir and Olympic athlete and Canadian Champion figure skater Mira Leung. Ms Leung spoke about the challenges facing youth and encouraged them to follow their dreams.
